How to get burnt plastic off my electric stove burner?

I accidently turned on the wrong burner and by the time I smelled the burning plastic of my teapot top, it was too late. I scraped most of it off with a knife but I am left with a plastic residue on the burner, which I know will smoke and stink quite a bit if turned back on.
